Only 12,276 customers of state-sun Citizens Property Insurance Corp. have accepted offers to switch to private insurers in 2017, though regulators have approved a fresh round of up to 19,520 attempts in August, state records show.
About 89,000 offers have been approved for the year, though insurers do not necessarily mail the maximum number allowed to Citizens customers. It’s a far cry from recent years, when Citizens shed about 1 million of its 1.5 million customers, mostly through such state-approved written offers.
For August, Southern Oak Insurance Co. has been approved for 15,000 offers and National Specialty Insurance Co. 4,520.
Customers can refuse the offers and stay with Citizens, but are automatically switched if they take no action.
