ID theft: Florida’s alarming risk with 901 data breaches in 2016

December marks National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month, so be aware of this: Florida ranks as the third riskiest state for identity theft and leads the nation in some categories in a new study.

Wallethub figures only the District of Columbia and California edge Florida for overall ID theft and fraud risk, and Florida ties for first in some categories including ID thefts per capita.

That’s a sobering reminder with more than 900 data breaches and counting in 2016. The year’s still not  over, and in fact the heaviest shopping season is just hitting its stride.

What to do? Monitor accounts closely, be particularly cautious about emails that seek financial information, and consider putting alerts or even a freeze on your credit report.

The metro area including Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach led the country with 316.2 ID theft complaints per 100,000 people, ahead of No. 2 Seattle (207) and No. 3. St. Louis (204.4), The Palm Beach Post reported in 2015. The region still ranked third nationally a year later.
