A fourth Wawa convenience store, to be built at the northeast corner of Lake Worth Road and Congress Avenue in Palm Springs, is coming to Palm Beach County. It’s expected to open in about a year.

Legacy Bank said Tuesday that JDR Development LLC has broken ground on its first Wawa store in South Florida. Legacy closed a $15 million facility for local developer, JDR Development, to develop multiple sites for new Wawa stores.

After entering Central Florida several years ago, Wawa announced plans in 2015 to build over 50 stores in South Florida over the next four years. The Pennsylvania-based Wawa sells fresh and build-to-order foods, as well as beverages, coffee, and gas.

Wawa, started in 1964 and known for its hoagies, has also received approvals to build stores in Greenacres at the southwest corner of Lake Worth and South Jog Roads, in West Palm Beach just east of Palm Beach International Airport and in Riviera Beach, at Blue Heron Boulevard and Garden Road.

“Legacy Bank is proud to have been a part of Wawa’s entry into South Florida,” said Dennis  Bedley, Chairman and CEO of Legacy Bank. “With each Wawa store expected to hire approximately 40 part-time and full-time employees, we’re financing projects that will have a positive impact on the communities we serve.”
