Florida’s governor and Cabinet should hire a national search firm to find a new insurance commissioner and “should allow for input and review by stakeholders, especially consumers,” an advocacy group is urging.

“This critically important appointment needs industry knowledge, experience and balanced leadership abilities,” said Jay Neal, president of the Florida Association for Insurance Reform. The nonprofit group based in Broward County includes insurance industry representatives and says it aims to promote a robust private market while protecting consumers.

Gov. Rick Scott and three Cabinet members are in charge of picking a successor for Kevin McCarty, who announced he is leaving the job in May. Scott’s office openly sought his replacement last year, contacting a Louisiana regulator, Ron Henderson. Other names mentioned in speculation this year include state Rep. Bill Hager, R-Delray Beach and former Iowa insurance commissioner.
